Play Gin Rummy - everything you need to know
Play Gin Rummy - everything you need to know
Play Gin Rummy is a very easy game and follows the same rules as ordinary rummy.
However there are some variations to the game – for example, unlike rummy where
2-6 players can play, gin rummy involves the use of 2 players and not more.
How to go about play Gin Rummy
Gin rummy typically involves 2 players and each player is dealt 10 cards. Every
round continues with a series of knocks or gins until a player reaches the
predefined winning score. The ultimate objective of the game is to make as many
melds as possible with the 10 cards before your opponent does. A meld is a
combination of cards in a sequence or having the same numerical value.
• Play Gin Rummy begins with each player being dealt a set of 10 cards
• One card is placed face-up among the top of the discarded pile of cards.
• Each player begins play Gin Rummy by making as many melds as possible with his
existing 10 cards
• Then he draws a new card either from the face up card or from the rest of the
face-down pile of cards
• He then discards one card from the existing set of 10 cards
• The game of play Gin Rummy again continues with each player selecting and
discarding cards
• Finally the player who makes the melds with the predefined number of points is
the winner
• Play Gin Rummy ends by a player declaring his victory through ‘knocking. This
is a process of placing the final discarded card face-down and showing all the
melds he has made
• It is to be noted that in gin rummy the total number of cards in the winner’s
hand should not exceed 10 cards
What is ginning?
In play Gin Rummy a player is not allowed to knock or go out unless and until
the existing deadwood in his hand are less than or equal to 10 points. He or she
must knock in case of having 0 points. This process of going out while having 0
points in deadwood is called Going Gin. The player knocks by clearly showcasing
the melds created and separating it from the deadwood. The play Gin Rummy ends
with the other player laying- off (or gets rid of his cards) by discarding the
cards that match the knocking player’s melds. However the defending player or
the other player is allowed to lay off only if the winning player has not gone
Gin. For example, if the player has knocked off and not gone gin, and has a meld
comprising three Kings. In such a case if the defending player has a King card,
he can lay it off.

How points are scored in play Gin Rummy
There are two prominent ways in which points are scored in gin rummy such as:
• Knock points: Once a player has knocked, followed by the defender laying-off
his cards, the knocking player will receive a score equal to the difference
between the 2 players’ hands.
• Gin bonus: In case a player goes gin, he gets to receive a bonus of 25 points
in addition to all the points present in the opponent’s remaining deadwood.
There are more chances of earning while going gin, because the opponent cannot
lay-off his cards then. So there will be much more deadwood in play Gin Rummy.
