Gin rule rummy - a
quick peek into the game
Gin rule rummy has certain specific methods to play. However, the rules are very
easy to pick up and with a little practice you can start playing like a pro!
Tips to play effective gin rule rummy
Rummy is always played with a deck of 52 cards and it’s the same with this game
too. However there are some guidelines and pointers to help you play the game
better:
• Gin rule rummy is primarily meant for 2 players
• Each player is dealt 10 cards each
• The 21st card is placed face-up on the top of the pile of cards
• All remaining cards are placed face-down in a pile at the center
• Gin rule rummy then begins with both players rearranging their 10 cards to
make temporary melds
• Melds are combinations of runs or sets of cards. Runs refer to a sequence of
cards like 3,4,5,6 all belonging to the same suit. A set refers to a collection
of cards having the same numerical value.
• After temporarily arranging their cards, both players will pick a new card
either from the face-up card or the topmost card of the face-down set of cards.
• Then after taking a new card, each gin rule rummy player needs to discard an
existing card from their set of cards.
• Then again each player will rearrange their cards to form suitable melds
• This process continues in gin rule rummy until a player will declare his
victory by placing a final discarded card face-down
• This process is also known as a going out
• After this, the round is scored with the values of all cards on remaining
players being credited to the winning player
Jargons to help you talk like a pro!
In gin rule rummy most of the times a lot of terms are used commonly. These
describe certain situations in the game. It is important for you, as a rummy
player, to know about these as it will help you understand the game better.

• Dealing: Dealing refers to the process of distributing cards to each player.
In gin rule rummy since there are only 2 players playing, each one is dealt 10
cards.
• Knocking: This refers to a player announcing his winning by placing the final
discarded card face-down. At this stage of gin rule rummy, the total number
cards he has should not exceed 10 else he will be disqualified. This player then
shows his set of melds and if accurate, he is declared winner. It is better to
try aiming for a knock as early as possible. If knocking is done in the first
round itself (also known as going rummy), value of the hand is doubled.
• Next hand: This is the player who will be chosen next for dealing the cards.
Usually the losing player in the earlier round will be chosen as the next hand
in gin rule rummy.
• Gin only: This is nothing but gin rummy except that in this case both players
need to go for gin and the winner is the one who gins first.
• Laying off: This involves discarding cards that coincidentally form melds
among the pile of discarded cards. This happens by chance and occurs rarely.
