Gin Rummy: Short and
sweet variation of rummy
Gin Rummy - Short and
sweet variation of rummy
Gin rummy is a card game which can be played by even two players. The aim is to
make the game faster and ensure quick victory. The rules are fairly simple and
easy to follow.
What is gin rummy?
Just like any other card game rummy, in this game too a deck of 52 cards is used
for playing. Gin rummy begins with each player being dealt 13 cards and the
remaining cards being placed at the center, with one card placed face-up. After
dealing is over, both players will evaluate their existing cards to see if they
can rearrange them to form complete sets. In gin rummy, a set can comprise
either 3 or 4 cards and can be made into a natural sequence (like A, K, Q, J) or
having the same numerical value (example 9 of hearts, 9 of spades and 9 of
clubs). The sequence is also referred to as a run and the cards having same
numerical value are referred to as a set. Once the players rearrange their cards
to form temporary sets, they will either pick the face-up card from the deck or
from the face-down cards in it. In return for one of these cards, they will
discard a card from their existing cards. After this, they again rearrange their
cards to make better sets or runs. Each round of gin rummy will continue in this
fashion, until one player declares his winning by placing the final discarded
card face-down. This is like a signal for his victory and on seeing this, the
other players will put their cards down.
Variations of gin rummy
This old-time variation of rummy has become so popular that it has evolved into
several other variants.
Some of the popular variations of gin rummy include:
• Oklahoma gin: In this type, depending on the value of the
face-up card, the minimum count at which players can knock, is determined.
Knocking is a term used to refer to a player ending the round due to certain
conditions. For example, if the up-card is a face card, the players can knock at
10 or fewer than 10. If the up-card is an Ace, no knocking will be allowed. If
the up-card happens to be a number card, then players need to knock within that
number count or less than that number.
• Hollywood gin: In this kind of gin rummy, scoring is kept at
three different games in the same time. If a player wins the first time, the
score is recorded under a column called Game One; if the player wins second
time, score is maintained under columns Game One and Game Two and if player wins
third time, the score is kept in all three columns. This ends the game.
• Single match: In this variation of gin rummy, play continues
until one player has 100 points or more. This player will be declared winner.
• Multi-match: In this type, match scores will be reset to zero
every time a match begins.

Meantime, game scores will be accumulated until a predefined winning score is
reached. Usually the winning score in multi-match gin rummy is designated as 500
or more.
Like in any other card game, rummy is no exception. It has the same rules, just
with a few variations here and there in terms of scoring methods and knocking
rules etc.
